Lady’s Finger/Okra curry

This is a simple puli curry to have with hot cooked rice. I love to have this along Potato fry or Easy jeera aloo for lunch.



Lady’s Finger/ Okra – 4 or 5

Shallots – (slit into two) 1/4 cup

Turmeric powder – 1/4 tsp

Curry leaves – few

Mustard seeds – 1/4 tsp

Tamarind – small lemon sized

Salt – as required

Oil – 2 tsp

To sauté and grind

Jeera – 1/4 tsp

Methi seeds/fenugreek seeds – a pinch

Grated Coconut – 1/4 cup

Tomato – 1 medium sized chopped

Curry leaves – few

Chilli powder – 1 1/2 tsp

Coriander powder – 2 1/2 tsp


step 1

  • Sauté all ingredients under ‘ to sauté and grind’ except chilli powder and coriander powder.
  • Switch off and add chilli powder and coriander powder.
  • Grind it smooth and keep aside.
  • Chop lady’s finger to 1 inch pieces.
  • Soak tamarind in 1/4 cup water.

Step 2

  • Heat oil in a pan, crackle mustard seeds.
  • Add shallots and curry leaves.
  • When shallots become golden brown add lady’s finger and sauté till edges of lady’s finger turns brown.
  • Add turmeric powder and tamarind extract.
  • Let it boil till raw smell goes.
  • Add ground coconut paste and salt.
  • Add required water to desired consistency.
  • Let it boil till oil clears up.
  • Switch off.
  • Serve with cooked rice.
